Flik Festival

06 - Zanelle - Painting Robot - 20080726A couple of weeks ago we went to the Flik Festival, which was an art/film show devoted to the combination of art and technology. It was held at Art Whino in the National Harbor. We decided to go, since my friend Pindar had a display set up there. Over the last couple of years, he’s built a robot that paints. It’s pretty cool, because it actually uses real paint and a brush to make paintings. While some may call it a glorified plotter, it’s actually much more than that, since it uses different algorithms to do the brush strokes, and there’s quite a bit of software behind it. Feed it a jpeg, and it will make the painting in various styles. I’ve yet to see 2 paintings come out alike. One thing he likes to do is make his robot do paintings of robots. These are some examples of paintings his robot has done:

There was some other pretty cool art. I’m trying to incorporate some aspects of these two for a tattoo I’m planning to get done this fall.

After that, we headed to go see the Gaylord National Hotel, since it was just down the street. Pindar told us to check it out, otherwise we would have skipped it. It’s HUGE, and it has an atrium that actually has a mini village in there. On the way there we also got to see the sun set over the potomac šŸ™‚ After a short while there we had to split though, because if we stayed past 9 we would have had to pay $10 for parking, vs the $1/hour. Yeah, parking currently is tight down there. You most likely won’t find street parking. Expect to park in a garage.
