Assateague 2008 (Part 2)

<< Part 1, Saturday

Sunday: 8/3/08

I had originally planned on sleeping in. Well, the sun gods would not allow that, and by about 9:30 I had to get out of the tent because it was too hot.

Around noon, the group next to us had cleared out, and the next group began to set up camp. A bunch of kids. Great! Not just kids, Boy Scouts! This could be a problem. It turned out they weren’t too bad, as they were almost never at the campsite, however watching then set up their tents was most amusing. They had shovels and were actually digging holes in the sand to support their A-frame tents. Or maybe the holes were for them to poop in. Who knows. It took them awhile to get set up. Even more amusing though, were the scout leaders. I’ve rarely seen such incompetence clustered together in one place. Between the five of them, they could not figure out how to set up the big tents. At one point I had to go to the bathroom, and while walking by I heard one of them exclaim: “What’s this hole here for?” You may as well have had the three stooges on the job. They did eventually get their tents set up though.

The rest of the day was pretty uneventful until evening time came around, and it was naptime. Not a moment to soon. The mosquitos had started to swarm again, and I barely made it to the tent in one piece. Then people wanted my help setting up the mosquito tent. I took one look at the screen of my tent and there were about 50 mosquitos sitting on there just waiting to get me. Sorry, nope, gonna have to pass on this one. I’m not a masochist.

After a brief nap, I woke up, we hung out some more, and went to bed fairly early.

Monday: 8/4/08

Another day of waking up early due to the wrath of the sun gods. At some point we went to the store to pick up some more ice, and some charcoal, since the wood we were using beforehand wasn’t working too well. Then I finally made it down to the beach during daylight hours for the first time this trip. A group of ponies was actually hanging out right on the beach, and later on a lone pony actually went in the water.

By evening, everyone except for Clint and Carolyn had left, and we wound up watching the sunset from the safety of the mosquito tent while the birds ravaged our remaining hot dog buns. Even though I tried to keep in the shade most of the time, I still wound up with a slight sunburn.

Tuesday: 8/5/08

I woke up just as Clint and Carolyn were leaving. Shannon and I wound up hanging out at the beach till about 12:30 before calling it a day and heading back home to face the doldrums of work the next day.

  1. Thanks for staying on the last day… We would have had fun alone, but no way to hide from the mosquitoes … we’d probably end up leaving for Bethany early!
I like the picture of the sunset through the tent.

  2. […] … to be continued … […]
